"THE
POTATOWALL"
SIGE:
"The wall was planned a really long time in advance.
We had prepared sketches and organized the cans in exactly
the desired colours. But in the end, the result was not what
we had imagined. This wall fell into my final phase of writing
and the formerly strong kick was already missing. Our main
concern were styles. Real pictures with elaborate background
were rare. Most of all we wanted to really perfect our style,
since we were missing somebody who could take care of characters.
Hence we stuck to the styles. The time was not yet ready for
commercial graffiti jobs, not in Hamburg at least. The action
was rather located in Munich. The image of graffiti in Hamburg
was too negative: graffiti equaled commuter train surfing,
equaled antisocial."
SENE: "In those days we also hoped to sell our
styles on canvas, much like the New Yorkers did in the earlier
days, where they made a lot of money with their canvases.
Those pictures went around the world. "
SIGE: "We did not want to adapt to the people,
but they were supposed to adapt themselves to us. We wanted
to sell what we liked, and the people were supposed to accept
it that way. But that was not simple, since they had a limited
mind and that was just our problem."
